Upgrade Completed

| No Comments | No TrackBacks
Okay, it took longer then I expected. Not that Movable Type was the problem. It was the internet connection at my apartment. It took over 5 hours to upload half the files to my server. So, today after work I hit Dunn Bros Coffee Shop in Hastings and it took about 30 minutes to finish uploading the other half. So, here I now type in the slightly altered interface. Sigh. Visually programmers just can not help but muck about with the layout. Oh well.
Just a quick note to tell all none (as opposed to all 1 million) of my readers that I am a bit behind on Movable Type upgrades. Of late the upgrades have gone smoothly, so I am hoping that this one follows suit.

What Makes Him So Important?

| No Comments | No TrackBacks
I want to know, because I have yet to understand why people read his columns. What makes David Brooks so damn important that what he has to say needs to be listened to? Did he accomplish some great feat that set our country back on the road to greatness? Did he learn to turn lead into gold? Did he fly all by himself to the moon and back? Honest to Flying Spaghetti Monster, what in hell did he ever accomplish that we should trust his word on anything?

Mind you, I am not saying he is not important. Obviously he has some impact on the national dialog. He gets to do his conservative punditry spin on NPR and other outlets. I just do not see how he was able to gain such a position. From what I have read of him on occasion over the years, he seemed to be on the wrong side of history.

Thinking Of You

To all my East Coast Blogging friends in the path of Irene; my thoughts and hopes are with you as you face the storm.

Tonight's Supper

Tonight I am dining on the gourmet delight of Grilled Cheese & Hardwood Smoked Turkey Hotdogs with grilled steak flavored potato chips. Photos will not be forthcoming.

It is a relatively simple meal to make. Wrap the hotdogs in paper towels, heat in the microwave for 1:30 minutes. Meanwhile, very lightly butter the insides of the bread, spice to taste, add cheese. When the hotdogs are done, slice them in half and lay them out on one slice of bread, cover with the other, then grill to desired color.

Non Tour Blogging

Yes, I know, it's been nothing but posts about "The Tour De Rook." Sorry about that. But, quite frankly, posting about politics is depressing. That, and there are others much better at commenting on the current political circus. Also, there are other personal issues I am just not in the mood to disclose at the moment. I am in an introspective phase, trying to learn more about myself and what I think, how I feel, and what the hell am I going to do with myself.

No, I am not going through some mid-life crisis. Seriously. Why are you even contemplating that?

It is that, after having left a relationship of 14 years, I find myself facing life with different goals and plans. It has been a radical adjustment for me. I really have not lived alone for most of my life. I was either in the Navy, or in long-term relationships. This last year has been an experience, let me tell you. I have been living alone, being responsible for only a cat and myself.

I am not lonely, if that is what you are thinking. I have friends, I go out and do things (beyond The Tour), and I enjoy life. However, learning that I can stand my own company, that I do not need to constantly be around others, is a new experience for me. Early in my recovery from drugs and alcohol, I did not particularly like myself. Hell, I probably did not even love myself (you, in the back row, with the smutty grin, keep it to yourself or so help me I will......).

Now, though, I am enjoying my life. Granted, I live in an efficiency apartment with a small bathroom and a kitchenette that does not really allow for cooking, Cinnamon is feeling caged in because of the lack of space, and I am just making ends meet. Yet I am enjoying my life.

Granted, there will probably not be much more in the way of posts after this, besides Tour De Rook updates, which are more for me to have a record of my exercise than about informing others. But I just wanted you all (what? all one of you? My stats are back to early blogging levels) to know that I am doing fine and perhaps one of these days I will return to commenting on the insanity that is our country's political discourse.

Now, if you will all excuse me, I am going to go back to living my life. Try not to wreck the place while I am busy.

Okay, Saturday I pushed myself into the wind. Yesterday, I took a nice leisurely ride about Hastings. Hence the difference in Average speeds. Now, two months ago, both of these rides would have been strenuous, exhausting rides. Not any longer. I can say for certain that I have lost weight. Also, my stamina is improved. And even more pleasant - I am losing my belly!

Okay, I pushed myself a bit for speed instead of distance. I also pushed myself while stretching. I can say with confidence that since I have been stretching I have noticed less back ache. I also seem to be sleeping just a bit better. Not great, but better none-the-less.

Update: CRAMPS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Damn if my toes on both feet decided to cramp when I was bending over to rinse out the tub before filling it for a hot bath.

Okay, I believe I have managed 3 legs a week for the last two weeks. Monday was actually completed in Hastings. I have not ridden on the Hastings bike trails in 2 or 3 years. It felt good to be back on familiar paths. However, the Hastings trails have many more hills than the roads out here around Hampton, Farmington, and Vermillion. Hence the lower average speed. I made an effort to go up every steep hill in Hastings. One other note: I actually managed to listen to the entire "The Fellowship of the Ring" soundtrack during my leg today.

Okay, I have to go into Hastings to get my laundry done.

Okay, I could really feel the difference in my strength and stamina. I was going up hills at 12 mph when only two weeks ago I could barely make it up them at 7 mph. For an old man that is over weight and out of shape, I consider that pretty damn good.
